Porn Users Hate Porn

Porn users hate porn. Porn producers are aware of this. Porn is typically laid out in different categories because the distributors know that porn users have developed a particular taste. Every category of porn is specifically designed for you to trip on and fall. The porn industry has a fear that they don’t like to talk about. They know that you can walk away from pornography without even thinking about it. Conversions taking place within the porn industry is enough evidence of porn consumers walking away. This is the power of Jesus. “As sin reigned in death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 5:20).

To illustrate this, let’s use the example of a bake shop. The porn producer/ distributor is the shop owner and various treats represent different types of porn…

One evening, a man walks into the bake shop and sees a selection of donuts in front of him. He can’t stand Double Chocolate, but he’s got a soft spot for Boston Cream. He orders one and consumes it. The next evening, he comes in and again goes for the Boston Cream without even glancing at the Double Chocolate or the other donuts there. A week goes by, and by now, the store owner has figured out his customer. He makes sure to have a Boston Cream ready at the right time and enjoys this customer’s habit.

One evening, by some miracle, the customer walks in, stands by the door, looks over at the donuts and notices the usual Boston Cream calling out to him. His stomach is going crazy, but in a moment of grace, he exhales and walks out of the store empty-handed. The owner notices this bizarre occurrence and is confused. The customer continues to visit, but his behaviour patterns are changing. Some days he does not show up!

The owner figures his customer’s taste is changing and realizes that he is working with a short window of opportunity to retain his customer. So what does he do? One evening, he has a friendly conversation with that customer convincing him not to worry about the health setbacks. He even uses his knowledge on his customer’s tastes and makes a new donut that the customer appears to enjoy. The owner doesn’t care. Business is business; no matter what donut his customer chooses, the cost is still the same.

Soon, the customer’s behaviour starts changing again. His presence is missing from the shop and the owner is furious! On the customer’s next visit, he throws in a free apple pie hoping to create a new craving for his customer. He spends money on advertising and even hires a worker to follow his customer home from work to place an enticing ad in a prominent location to lure the customer in. Business is going down and the shop owner is desperate.

The customer on the other hand is determined to drive straight home from work and remain home. He recognizes his weakness and is catching on to the schemes of the shop owner. He knows that to the owner he is a number, but to his family he is a person. He notices the advertising and is very tempted to visit the shop, promising himself that he will only stop by for a little while or once a week. From past experience, he knows that he has failed many times in using this strategy. Things get worse when the owner purchases road side stands that span across this man’s daily commute. By now, the donuts have been marketed to death and this man is sick of it! To be safe, he enlisted the help of some friends to prevent him from making mistakes. Often they carpool together and help each other.

Porn consumers recognize their taste very early on. Some consumers have bigger sweet teeth than others. Surfing the web is like going home from work. You know where to find the bake shops. You also know that once you frequent them, they work to cater to your taste so they can keep your business. We’re fighting a different war on pornography than the generation before us. Earlier on, porn had to be sought out. Now, porn easily brings itself to you. Sometimes the owner shows up at your front door. Worse: sometimes someone has invited the owner in. Even worse: sometimes you invite the owner to sleepover and he starts replacing your food with donuts.

Be strong. Remember, the owner is relying on your business. Without you giving in, his business is zilch. This isn’t going to stop him from throwing in freebies and putting up shop on your daily commute, but this is why you also have friends to keep you from falling. When we commune with our friends or join in the celebration of the Sacraments we are strengthened and can help others with struggles that we once experienced.

Pray for strength. Pray for each other. We are weak and ultimately it is not our strength, but the power at work within us, the power of Jesus that helps us overcome.
